I wondered what causes a motorcycle to overheat/completely turn off so I did some online searching came up with information about cooling systems.
But before I delved into the areas of cooling systems, this is the thread that even got me started on looking into the cooling system area: http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409194
The cooling system on a motorcycle is quite similar to a car's, but smaller.
So, as I was looking up possible cooling problems, I found several pages
Here's this one: http://www.arrowheadradiator.com/overheating_causes_and_cures.htm
It just talks about the cooling system and possible problems with them.
Several things to keep in mind. Read all this material with a cool head. It was much harder to process when my brain was going "What can I do? What can I do?!"
Then, I also read this article which goes in-depth and helps beginners like me: http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_I_service_the_cooling_system%3F
Also, remember fill the radiator first, where it's needed, then fill the coolant reservoir. But the radiator must be filled when it's absolutely cold, not right after a ride or even a few hours after. The difference of morning to late afternoon might be enough though.
Then, there's even a section labelled: "This-is-my-first-time method" for those who are a bit nervous about dealing with air bubbles directly through the radiator. I think it's really helpful and definitely more of what I would do for now. I wouldn't do the original method for awhile, probably only once I'm fairly confident and directly taught how to change coolant for my motorcycle. I will wait eagerly for that day.
