How to Connect a PC (Windows 8) to Mac via Ethernet

This is a tutorial of how to connect a PC to a Mac without using any fancy hardware, just a macbook, windows computer, and an ethernet cable.

First, you connect your turned on Macbook and PC via their ethernet ports.

PC side

  1. Now, go to the folder which you need to access from your mac. Right-click, Share with Guest. You'll have to type this in. Click ok when the window pops up to finish the sharing settings.
  2. In the search bar, which can be brought up using Windows key + Q, type in Network and Sharing Center. Select it to access the next steps.
  3. In the sidebar which says Change advanced sharing settings, make sure to have network discovery, file and printer sharing turned on for public networks. As well as turn on password protected sharing.
  4. Now go back to the Network and Sharing Center->Change adapter settings. Double click Ethernet (in older computers, LAN). Select Details. Then, find your Autoconfiguration IPv4. The format should be something like this: 169.555.55.555 Remember it because you'll need to type it in later on your mac.

Mac side

  1. Have a finder window selected. Then, type cmd+k. This should bring up a server window.
  2. In the server window, type: smb://YOURIPV4 and select connect.
  3. A new window will pop up. Select guest and then the file sharing window will pop up where you can drag and drop files as you'd like.

Reminder:
Turn off network discovery and file and printer sharing.
Also, turn back on password protected sharing if these settings were changed in this tutorial.
Finally, turn off sharing for the specific folder selected earlier.

Most of the information is sourced from the sources listed below but with tips, steps and reminders more strategically placed so you don't have to keep going back and forth between windows. Also, it's an updated tutorial with terminology which makes more sense for Windows 8.
