Code generation

For some reason when learning about code generation for compilers they need to keep an activation record of procedures and such in order to follow along and close and open things in the right order. Anyway, when it comes to procedures, they have something called a control link which needs the compiler needs to track. I wonder what it is. Can anyone answer what a control link is?
